- play non-chord tones
- add wider intervals between notes

- introduce more rhythmic complexity

- use jagged articulations such as staccato notes, flutter tongue, stabbing the reed, overblowing, and the like
- employ various dramatic devices such as swooops, glissandos, shakes, trills
