every instrument has a range of dramatic devices that cna be used to color a musical phrase.
These devices ranger from simple articulation to moer dynamic effect, such as swoops and double stops.
Each of thse devices is one moer tool yu can use to add interest to your solo phrases.
Articulation:
–you don’t want to play all your notes perfectly straight.
–vary your articulation, the way you attach each note
make a phrase unique your own
it is the difference between what you say and how you say it
the notes you play are what you say
and how you articulate those notes represents your enunication.
Emphasize a note by tonguing it with a stacatto attck.
don’t overdo it.
too much tonguing leads to choppy phrases
go for a smoother, more legato effect by slurring the notes together.
Make sure to vary your articulation
a solo that’s all staccato or all slurred is bound to get old quite quickly.
Dynamic effects:
there are a large number of dynamic effects you use whenimporvising
–drp off: a rapidly descending chormiatc figure, typically at end of a phrase
–glissando — a gradual sliding effect between 2 notes
rip — a fast ascending figure
shake: a type of trill but with a wider interval between 2 notes
smear — a very short glissando where you approach teh target note from slightly below the pitch
trill — rapidly alternate between a main note and a subsidiary note a degree higher.
